Description
The tour begins next to the sculpture of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, an 18th-century Spanish military figure important in North American history. From here, you will walk through the town while learning about its history and unique features.
Key monuments visited include the Niemeyer Center, the church of Sabugo in the old fishermen’s quarter, and the neo-Gothic church of Santo Tomás, often called the cathedral of Avilés.
The route also covers the Avilés estuary, where you can see its views and understand its role during the Second Industrial Revolution.
At Plaza de España, you will see the Town Hall and the Ferrera Palace, one of Asturias’ oldest Baroque buildings. The tour also passes the Balsera Palace, the parish of San Nicolás de Bari, the church of the Franciscan Fathers, and the Camposagrado Palace.
