Description
The tour begins at Casa Paquet (Tourist Office) and follows the story of Xixón’s seafaring community, starting with the Tránsitu de Ballenes and the La Soledad chapel, once the headquarters of the seafarers' guild that helped establish Xixón as a key whaling port.
Next, you will explore the area's inshore fishing heritage near the old fish market (rula) and the dam. This includes learning about the local canning industry and the role of women, known as the sardine makers, who sold fresh fish in the streets.
The route continues through the fishing district of Cimavilla, known for its colorful fishermen’s houses, and reaches Plaza Arturo Arias (formerly Campu les Monxes). Here, you’ll hear stories of local figures such as La Tarabica, Telvina, Rambal, and the female cigar makers involved in the first women’s strike.
The tour also includes entry to the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum, highlighting the connection between the sea and the people who shaped the Barriu Altu neighborhood’s character.
After approximately 90 minutes of walking, the visit concludes near the Municipal Fish Market with an introduction to Asturian words and expressions linked to the Cantabrian Sea.
