If you’re into nature and wildlife, Asturias is the place you’ll want to be. The region’s rugged mountains, deep forests, and wild coastline offer a ton of ways to get outside and see some incredible creatures. You might catch the elusive Cantabrian brown bear around Somiedo, but don’t count on it , these bears are shy and the best tours tend to happen in spring or early summer when they’re most active.

One of my favorite spots for a nature walk is Redes Natural Park. The streams, ancient woods, and sudden bursts of wildflowers make it feel like stepping into another world. And if you’re lucky, you’ll spot the rare Iberian wolf tracks along the trails. Tours often include local guides who know exactly where to go and what’s in season, so definitely take one rather than wandering off on your own.

Don’t overlook the coast either. Asturias’ cliffs and coves are home to seagulls, cormorants, and sometimes even dolphins just offshore. Last summer I took a boat trip from Llanes that got us pretty close to some nesting seabirds,great for photos. Pro tip: bring sturdy shoes and a rain jacket, weather can shift fast even in summer, and layers are always your friend here. Trust me, you’ll want to be ready for whatever gets thrown at you in Asturias’ wild outdoors.

My two cents on wildlife tours

If you want a true local tip, don’t just stick to the well-known parks. I recommend checking out the less touristy parts of Somiedo on foot with a guide who’s lived there for years. They’ll show you hidden trails and spots where animal tracks are fresh, and you’ll avoid crowds. Also, the early morning hours are magic,you’ll have the forest mostly to yourself and wildlife tends to be more active then.

Another thing, Asturias’ weather can change in a heartbeat, especially up in the mountains. Even if the forecast looks good, pack a rain jacket and some warm layers. Trust me, it’ll make your time outdoors way more enjoyable.
